Addressing The CNA Shortage in Pennsylvania: A Collaborative Approach
Pennsylvania is addressing its long-term care (LTC) workforce crisis with a new Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) training hub in Western Pennsylvania. Led by the Training and Education Fund and supported by organizations like Transitions Healthcare, this initiative aims to remove barriers in CNA recruitment, training, and certification.
Funded by a $400,000 grant, the program addresses challenges like limited testing availability and last-minute exam cancellations. The hub builds on the success of a Pittsburgh-based training center, which has already reduced CNA turnover rates from 61% to 16% and improved attendance by 66%.

The training model offers six-week part-time classes with stipends for travel, childcare, and equipment, creating opportunities for underserved communities to join the LTC workforce. As a key partner, Transitions Healthcare actively supports this effort to develop skilled caregivers and improve access to high-quality care.
This hub is a vital step toward strengthening Pennsylvania’s LTC workforce and ensuring sustainable, compassionate care for residents.
