Embracing A New Independence: Ethel

Meet Ethel, whose journey at Transitions Healthcare North Huntingdon is nothing short of remarkable. After undergoing a below-the-knee amputation, Ethel faced the daunting task of relearning many aspects of her daily living. Thanks to her unmatched determination combined with the dedicated support from our rehabilitation team, she was able to achieve all her activities of daily living (ADL) goals and transition back home in just 28 days.

During her stay, Ethel mastered the ability to ambulate short distances with a wheeled walker, demonstrating incredible progress and mobility. She diligently worked on her self-care routines, successfully completing them with newfound independence. Her ability to transfer to various surfaces—including the bed, wheelchair, and armchair—was outstanding. Each milestone was met with determination, and each success brought her closer to her goal of returning home.

At the end of last month, Ethel returned home to the loving embrace of her husband and son, equipped with the skills and confidence to continue her rehabilitation journey. Her next step is to complete her prosthetic training from home at an outpatient clinic, where she will learn to use her new prosthetic leg.
